The World Chess Championship 2023 match takes place in Astana (Kazakhstan) between April 7 and May 1, 2023. There are 2 contenders fot the title: Ian Nepomniachtchi (Russia, under FIDE flag) vs Ding Liren (Cnina).

Current world chess champion Magnus Carlsen abdicated and decided not to defend it's title, so there are 2 contenders for the title.

Total 14 games would be played. If the result is equal, there would be a tiebreak day for rapid and blitz games.

After the first 4 games, the result is 2:2, but it wasn't boring at all!!

Ian Nepomniachtchi had won game 2 with black pieces.
The World Champion Magnus Carlsen wins game 6 against Ian Nepomniachtchi

On December 3, 2021, the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen wins against Ian Nepomniachtchi in game 6 of their WCC Match in Dubai.

Carlsen (white) accepted the offered exchange of his queen for 2 rooks on move 26. This created equal position, but imbalanced and fragile (if someone makes a mistake).

Such imbalanced position was very exciting to watch and analyze for all the chess fans and us on Chessfish.com. Both players had better options, but they are humans and haven't played the best moves.

Tha game was long, very long... Playing over 100 moves on the chess board and the position was still equal and still imbalanced.

At some point, after few exchanges, Magnus had a rook, a knight and 2 pawns VS a queen for Ian. The strategy was: to advance the pawns and to protects the king from checks.

Carlsen started to move his pawns and Ian followed a wrong plan on move 130 (!). Few moves later Magnus was winning and Ian Nepomniachtchi resigned on move 136.

It was the longest chess game in a World Chess Championship match so far!

You can review the game here:
https://lichess.org/broadcast/world-chess-championship-2021/game-6/h7a3P5YF

There are 8 games left, except someone gets few points lead...

Carlsen defeated Nakamura to win the 1st Magnus Carlsen Invitational 2020 online chess super-GM tournament

Magnus Carlsen have just defeated Hikaru Nakamura to win the 1st Magnus Carlsen Invitational online chess super-GM tournament, which was held online April 18 - May 3, 2020.

In the final Carlsen managed to win 2 games with white pieces, while Nakamura won his first game with white and drew the last game, resulting in 2.5:1.5 for Carlsen.

Semifinals

While the final was interesting, the semifinal between Liren Ding and Magnus Carlsen was even more dramatic and interesting. First game was a draw. Carlsen blundered in the 2nd game, thus having to win at least one game from the next 2 games.

In game 3, Carlsen has chosen quite passive variation for white and he was pressed to the wall to find a way to at least draw the game. He managed to complicate the game and with some minor mistakes from Ding, he came back with a decisive attack and won the 3rd game, drawing the match: 1.5:1.5.

The 4th game was almost a draw, but in the last minute (exactly last minute on the clock) Ding decided to decline the draw (by moves repetition) and go for an attack in blitz-mode, thus trying to avoid going to blitz games. Carlsen defended well and after a blunder by Ding, he managed to win this 4th game and qualified for the final.

In the other semifinal, Nakamuka played against Caruana. After 2 draws, Nakamura won the 3rd game with black pieces and needed a draw in the 4th to continue to the final.

However, having the white pieces and initiative, Nakamura blundered and lost a pawn in 2-moves combination. Caruana had a good chance and won the game to draw the result 2:2, thus the match continued with 2 blitz games. Both blitz games was won by Nakamura and he qualified to the final.

We can hope to see another super-GM online chess tournament in June and/or July 2020.
