M-Tel Masters 2008
M-Tel Masters 2008 will take place 7th-18th May 2008 in the Central Military Club in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.
The Rules
The tournament rules are the same as the previews three editions. The event is a 10 round double round robin with a 5 hour time control. In case of a draw at the top there will be a tie break for determining the winner. Well knows "Sofian rule" for the draws will be valid. According to it the players do not have the right to agree a draw. This can be decided only by the chef arbiter of the tournament.
"Play like Topalov"
Like the last year Bulgarian grandmaster Veselin Topalov will play with the winner of "Play like Topalov" internet game. The 23-year old American mathematician from the state of Iowa Jason Juett guessed the biggest number of moves of the 19th World Champion in his games of the super chess tournament M-Tel Masters 2007. He guessed a total of 250 moves of Topalov which is 41 more that the achievement of the last year’s winner – the Italian Alex Brunetti.
The game between them will be before the start of this year edition of the tournament. „I'd like to thank everybody involved for putting together such a neat contest and also congratulate GM Topalov on winning the tournament with a fantastic comeback for the third time. The Place
The Central Military Club is a multi-purpose monument of culture building in the centre of Sofia, located on Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard and Georgi Sava Rakovski Street.
The foundation stone of the edifice was laid in 1895. The building has three storeys and features a coffeehouse, an art gallery, a number of refined halls varying in size, as well as an imposing concert hall with 450 seats. Due to all this, the Central Military Club has always been an important cultural centre of the capital, once exhibiting works by Ivan Mrkvička, Vladimir Dimitrov, Jaroslav Věљнn and providing these noted artists with studios. The concert hall has also seen performances by actors and opera singers like Krastyu Sarafov, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Feodor Chaliapin, Boris Christoff, and bands like Ladytron etc.
