World Chess Championship 2008 (WCC 2008)

The World Chess Championship 2008 (WCC 2008) will take place in the second half of the year 2008 (most probably in September-October). The World Chess Championship 2008 will be a match, not a tournament. The reigning world chess champion, Indian Viswanathan Anand will defend his title against the former world champion, Russian Vladimir Kramnik.

Another chess match should precede the World Chess Championship 2008. Bulgarian Veselin Topalov will play a match against the winner of World Cup 2007. This match should take place in the 3rd quarter of 2008. The Updated List of Qualifiers for the World Cup 2007 is available at FIDE site, dated 9/30/2007.

Women World Chess Championship 2008 in Argentina?

FIDE Women World Chess Championship is planned for 2008. From Press Release - Presidential Board meeting in Mexico City, dated 9/19/2007 we find out this phrase "Women World Chess Championship 2008 will be held in Argentina". The event was planned for "March 8-25th, 2008 in Prague, Czech Republic" (from Press Release of the 1st Presidential Board 2007).

The reigning women world chess champion is Xu Yuhua from China. On March 25, 2006 she won the Women's World Chess Championship (10-27 March 2006) in Ekaterinburg (Russia). Read more...

WCC Mexico 2007 - The last round but one

Peter Leko beats Russian grandmaster Alexander Morozevich at last but one round of WCC Mexico 2007. After the game Leko had to pass a drugs test. So Morozevich had to confront the press by himself.
When asked where he thought he had gone wrong, Alexander replied that his chess understanding was not good enough to answer the question.
All other games were drawn.
A game before the end Viswanatan Anand has a clear point at the top.

Mexico 2007 World Chess Championship - theoretical chances for Gelfand

Two rounds before the end of The World Chess Championship in Mexico, Israelian super-grandmaster Boris Gelfand kept real chances for the title. There is only a point between him and Viswanatan Anand.
Gelfand won against Aronian, and Anand drown his game against Svidler. Leaders both had played with black pieces.
