The WCC Mexico 2007 will take place in Mexico City (Mexico), beginning 12th September.
In 2002 Levon Aronian became World Junior Champion. In 2004 he progressed to the 3rd round of the FIDE World Championship but was knocked out by Pavel Smirnov.
During the World Cup chess tournament in Khanty Mansiysk (Russia) in December 2005, in the final round Levon Aronian beat Ruslan Ponomariov and won the World Cup.
In March 2006 he took first place at the Linares chess tournament, half a point ahead of Teimour Radjabov and Veselin Topalov. In November 2006 he shared first place at the Memorial Tal in Moscow (Russia) along with Leko and Ponomariov. In January 2007 Aronian shared first place at the Corus chess tournament in Wijk aan Zee together with Radjabov and Topalov. In May 2007 he defeated World Champion Vladimir Kramnik 4-2 in a rapid chess match.
In 2006 he became Chess960 World Champion by defeating Svidler in the final. In 2007 he successfully defended his title of Chess960 World Champion by beating Viswanathan Anand.
His 2005 World Cup victory qualified him for the FIDE Candidates matches 2007 in Elista, Kalmykia. There, he knocked out Magnus Carlsen and Alexey Shirov to won a quota for WCC Mexico 2007.
What's next? The World Chess Championship 2007 in Mexico city is his chance to the top! Aronian, together with Anand and Kramnik are the main pretenders for winning the World Chess Champion title.

In 2002 Peter Leko won the Dortmund tournament, which victory qualified him to play a match against Vladimir Kramnik. After several delays, the match was held September 25 - October 18, 2004, in Brissago, Switzerland. Leko led by a point with just one game left to play. Kramnik managed to win the last game, tying the match 7-7 and holds the championship title.
In November 2006 Leko shared first place at the Memorial Tal in Moscow (Russia) together with Aronian and Ponomariov.
In October 2005, Leko played for the FIDE World Chess Championship title in San Luis, Argentina, and was ranked 5th with 6.5 points. In May-June 2007 Leko played in the Candidates Matches and he won his matches against Mikhail Gurevich (+3-0=1) and Evgeny Bareev (+2-0=3), to qualify for FIDE World Chess Championship 2007.
