Corus Chess Tournament 2008 - Round 5 results

Veselin Topalov and Shakhriar Mamediarov won their games in 5th round of Corus 2008. The super tournament takes place in Holland city of Wijk aan Zee between 11th and 27th of January 2008.

M-Tel Masters 2008

M-Tel Masters 2008 will take place 7th-18th May 2008 in the Central Military Club in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

The Rules
The tournament rules are the same as the previews three editions. The event is a 10 round double round robin with a 5 hour time control. In case of a draw at the top there will be a tie break for determining the winner. Well knows "Sofian rule" for the draws will be valid. According to it the players do not have the right to agree a draw. This can be decided only by the chef arbiter of the tournament.

"Play like Topalov"
Like the last year Bulgarian grandmaster Veselin Topalov will play with the winner of "Play like Topalov" internet game. The 23-year old American mathematician from the state of Iowa Jason Juett guessed the biggest number of moves of the 19th World Champion in his games of the super chess tournament M-Tel Masters 2007. He guessed a total of 250 moves of Topalov which is 41 more that the achievement of the last year’s winner – the Italian Alex Brunetti.
The game between them will be before the start of this year edition of the tournament. „I'd like to thank everybody involved for putting together such a neat contest and also congratulate GM Topalov on winning the tournament with a fantastic comeback for the third time. Corus Chess Tournament 2008 - Round 4 results

Norvegian Magnus Carlsen take sole lead in Group A. He has 3 of 4 possible points.
At today round Loek van Weli and Vladimir Kramnik won their games Against Veselin Topalov and Pavel Eljanov. Both played with white.

Corus Chess Tournament 2008 - Aronian and Carlsen tie for top spot in Group A after Round 2

Armenian Levon Aronian and Norvegian Magnus Carlsen tie for top spot after the second round of Corus Chess Tournament 2008 in Wijk aan Zee, Holand. They both won their games in that round and collected full active. All other games in Group A were finished on a draw today.

Corus 2008 - Chess Elite in Wijk aan Zee - 11 players from FIDE Top 15

Corus 2008 will be one of the strongest chess tournaments ever (no doubt!). The tournament will be held from 11-27 January 2008 in Wijk aan Zee. 11 from top 15 chess players from fide rating list (January 2008) will play in this tournament. The most popular (and strongest) are current World chess champion - Anand, former world chess champions - Kramnik and Topalov (also one of the winners in 2007), the other 2 winners in 2007 - Radjabov and Aronian, the best woman in the World - Judit Polgar and the best young chess player - Magnus Carlsen... Incredible Corus 2008 Chess Tournament...

This sounds crazy, but this tournament should be more interesting than World Chess Championship 2007 in Mexico. More fighters on the board than Mexico and no doubt many interesting moments coming soon...

The tournament is included in the so called Chess Grand Slam 2008. In the "B" group, the young Bulgarian player GM Ivan Cheparinov (2713) is the rating leader, followed by Bacrot, Sargissian, Harikrishna etc. In the "C" section are players between 2400-2600 (average 2504).

Kramnik, Anand Tie for Top Spot in Jan 2008 FIDE Rating list

Former world champion Vladimir Kramnik caught up with World Champion Viswanathan Anand to tie for the top position both with ratings of 2799 in the January 2008 FIDE Rating List. In the juniors, Magnus Carlsen edged out Sergey Karjakin for the top spot.
The tie between Anand and Kramnik is a precursor to their exciting World Championship Match this October in Bonn, Germany.
Another interesting points in FIDE rating list January 2008 are
- Alexei Shirov gained 16 points to move from 10th to 7th;
- Magnus Carlsen gained 19 points to move from 16 to place 13;
- Sergey Karjakin gained 38 points to move from 24 to 14;
- American Gata Kamsky gained 12 to move from 17 to 15;
- Bulgarian Ivan Cheparinov gained 43 (!) to move from place 42 to place 19.

World Chess Championship 2008 to be held in Bonn, Germany

Indian grandmaster Viswanathan Anand and Russian one - Vladimir Kramnik battle for the highest chess title from 11th to 30th of October 2008 in Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The match will consist of twelve games, played under classical time controls. If there is a tie at the end of these games a tiebreak will be played on October 30, 2008. The prize fund, which will be split equally between the players, is 1,5 million Euro (approximately 2,1 million US Dollars) including taxes and FIDE licensee fees. Main sponsor is Evonik Industries AG.

Corus 2008 - Three Grandmasters' tournaments will take place in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands from 12th to 27th of January, 2008. This year (2008) starts the Chess "Grand Slam". Corus 2008 chess tournament will be the 1st tournament, part of the Chess Grand Slam.

In the "A" GM group we will see 3 world chess champions - Anand, Kramnik and Topalov. In the last year (2007), the winners was 3 players - Topalov, Radjabov and Aronian. Kramnik was 4th, Anand - 5th. Now Anand is the world chess champion and we expect more fight than usual.

Gata Kamsky wins World Chess Cup 2007. Topalov - Kamsky pretentents match in 2008

Gata Kamsky won the World Chess Cup 2007 which took place in Khanty-Mansiysk (Russia), November 22 - December 16, 2007. In the final round Kamsky won a game and drew 3 other games to win last mini-match (2,5-1,5) and the World Chess Cup 2007.

As the winner of WCC 2007 Gata Kamsky have the right to play against the former World Chess Champion Bulgarian Veselin Topalov. This match will be pretendents' match and is scheduled for 2nd half of year 2008. The winner will have the right to play a match in year 2009 against the current World Chess Champion.
